PETER GOGARTY

Skills, experience and expertise: Peter holds Bachelor and Masters qualifications in the Social Sciences, a Graduate Diploma of Law, and Diplomas in Business Management, Company Directorship and Financial Services. He is an Accredited Mediator, a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Fellow of the Australasian Mutuals Institute.

Prior to taking up a position on the Board of Community CPS, Peter was on the Board of Companion Credit Union Limited and was the Chairman of its Board from November 2008. During his time with Companion he held positions on Board sub-committees including Audit, Governance, Executive, and Board Nominations.

Peters’ professional career up until 2008 was in Local Government – holding senior management positions with responsibilities as diverse as Land Development, Business Planning, Governance, Strategic Planning and Community Facilities Management.

He chaired a number of Standing Committees for the Hunter Region Organisation of Councils on issues including the introduction of Privacy Legislation, Community Development, and Strategic Business Planning. During his time working in the Hunter Valley, Peter became a foundation director of “Vintage Hunter” – a Wine and Visitors Centre located in Pokolbin NSW which showcases that region’s world renowned Wine and Tourism industries.

Since 2008 Peter has been self employed – working with clients on a range of projects and business relationship difficulties. He says that he has been fortunate to have been able to select clients with whom he shares business values such as ethical behaviour and good governance practice.

Other interests: In his non working life, Peter has become a passionate advocate for improved child protection measures by Church and Government institutions, and has involved himself in a number of initiatives aimed at assisting adults who were abused as children. He is firmly of the view that “…bad things happen when good people remain silent.” In addition to this work, Peter has involved himself on committees managing youth crisis refuges, a child care centre, and a group home for intellectually disabled people. He has established a community base aged care facility and has assisted a number of community based organisations to improve their management and planning practices.
